Andri Róbertsson

Bass – Baritone (Iceland)

At the age of 24 Icelandic bass-baritone Andri Róbertsson was nominated as the ´Brightest Hope in Classical Music´at the 2013 Icelandi Music Awards.

He came to Dame Kiri’s attention and was invited to attend several master classes with her as well as singing as her guest at special concerts. Dame Kiri continued to mentor him over the next 3 years including his attendance at the 2009 Solti Te Kanawa Accademia di bel canto.

He studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London and received many awards and competition prizes including the first prize in the Competition of the Icelandic Symphony Orchestra and the Icelandic Academy of Arts, The Major van Someren-Godfery Prize for English Songs, The Joan Chissell Prize for Schumann Lieder, The Marjorie Thomas Art of Song Prize, the Schubert Lieder Prize and the audience prize in the Mozart Singing Competition in London.
In 2013 when Andri was offered an opportunity to attend the National Opera Studio the Kiri Te Kanawa Foundation (UK)supported him with a Tuition Scholarship.

Andri's operatic performances include Sarastro in Mozart's The Magic Flute with Garsington Opera and with Joanna MacGregor at the Bath International Music Festival; Don Villotto in Haydn's La vera costanza with Royal Academy Opera conducted by Trevor Pinnock; Herr Buff in Mozart's Der Schauspieldirektor  with Royal Academy Opera; Gremin in Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin with Royal Academy Opera conducted by Jane Glover; Arthur in Peter Maxwell Davies's The Lighthouse with Royal Academy Opera conducted by Lionel Friend; Craftsman in The Commission by Elspeth Brooke with the Royal Opera House, Opera North and Aldeburgh Music conducted by Richard Baker; Barman/Hunter Gracchus/Policeman in Café Kafka by Francisco Coll with the Royal Opera House, Opera North and Aldeburgh Music conducted by Richard Baker. Andri also sang the bass part in Trauernacht, a staged version of Bach´s Cantatas, at Festival d'Aix en Provence, directed by Katie Mitchell and conducted by Raphael Pichon.

His opera scenes performances include Figaro in Mozart's Le Nozze di Figaro; Truffaldino in Strauss'sAriadne auf Naxos; Papageno in Mozart's Die Zauberflöte; Barone Duophol in Verdi's La Traviata; Masetto in Mozart's Don Giovanni; Gubetta in Donizetti's Lucrezia Borgia; Publio in Mozart's La Clemenza di Tito; Don Pasquale in Donizetti's Don Pasquale; Trulove in Stravinsky's The Rake's Progress; Don Alfonso in Mozart's Cosi fan tutte.
Andri will join the International Opera Studio in Zürich, Switzerland in September 2014. His roles there and at Zürich Opera House include Sprecher and second priest in Die Zauberflöte, Der König in Die Gänsemagd and Brabantische Edle in Lohengrin.

In 2018 Andri appeared at ROH, Covent Garden, in George Benjamin’s new opera “Lessons in Love and Violence, a role he reprises when the production will be staged at Dutch National Opera later in the year and again at Hamburg Opera and Opera de Lyon in spring 2019.  He was cast as Theseus in Midsummer Night’s Dream at English National Opera this spring.
