2009 was a vintage year for young New Zealand Bass Wade Kernot. Following his graduation from The National Opera Studio in London he was a finalist in the 2009 Lexus Song Quest, a semi-finalist at the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World competition and a quarter-finalist at the Neue Stimmen competition in Germany. He was also invited to attend the Solti Te Kanawa Accademia di Bel Canto in Tuscanny. Wade also performed at the Linari Festival in Tuscany, the Verbier Festival in Switzerland and the Edinburgh Festival's concert performance of Verdi's Macbeth which was recorded by the BBC.
Wade was very grateful for the support he received from the Kiri Te Kanawa Foundation – ‘Thank you so much to Dame Kiri and the Foundation for its continued support and interest. Without the Foundation’s help especially during my preparation for the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World, I would not have attracted such a good agent and I may not have found the work I have obtained for the next 18 months and further into the future.”
Wade has recently accepted a full-time position with Theatre St Gallens in Switzerland. His contract includes 30-40 performances a year. Wade is enthusiastic about this opportunity and the roles he will perform.
